| Blizzards (Schneestürme):
"Blizzards are characterized by low temperatures (usually below 20°F) and accompanied by winds that are at least 35 mph or greater, there must also be sufficient falling and/or blowing snow in the air that will frequently reduce visibility to 1/4 mile or less for a duration of at least 3 hours.
A severe blizzard is considered to have temperatures near or below 10°F, winds exceeding 45 mph, and visibility reduced by snow to near zero."
Dies ist die amerikanische Definition, hier zitiert vom US-Wetterkanal. Blizzards ereignen sich also normalerweise bei Temperaturen unter minus 6 Grad C, Windgeschwindigkeiten von mehr als 56 Kilometern pro Stunde, Sichtweiten von 400 Metern oder weniger. Von einem Blizzard spricht man, wenn diese Bedingungen mindestens 3 Stunden andauern.
Zu Beginn des Jahres 2006 wurde in den USA die NESIS-Skala (NESIS = Northeast Snowfall Impact Scale) eingeführt, mit der Schneestürme auf einer fünfteiligen Skala von 1 bis 5 eingestuft werden. Zwei Blizzards werden vom US-Wetterdienst in die höchste Stufe 5 eingeordnet: März 1993 und Januar 1996.

Schneestürme in Deutschland:
Auch in Mitteleuropa gibt es immer wieder mal Schneestürme. Die schlimmsten waren wohl die zum Jahreswechsel 1978/79 und im Februar 1979, als das öffentliche Leben in Norddeutschland nahezu völlig zum Erliegen kam. Aber auch im März 1969 und im Januar 1987 gab es zum Teil erhebliche Schneeverwehungen, und auch in anderen Jahren schneiten manchmal ganze Orte ein.
1978/79 legten gleich zwei Schneestürme den Norden Deutschlands lahm. Auf der Seite zum Winter 1978/79 finden Sie viele Fotos, Wetterkarten und Links.
