& Landsea et al. (2010) haben in der vergangenen Dekande einen sehr deutlichen Anstieg der kurzlebigen Tropischen Stürme und Hurrikane festgestellt, der sehr wahrscheinlich auf die besseren Beobachtungsbedingungen zurückzuführen ist. Dies dürfte die durchschnittliche Zahl der tropischen Wirbelstürme auf dem Atlantik beeinflussen. Mit dem plötzlichen Anstieg der kurzlebigen Stürme nach der Jahrtausendwende könnte eine realistischere Abschätzung des langjährigen Mittels eher bei 13 Stürmen und Hurrikanen im Jahr liegen.
Das Jahr 1933 hielt lange Zeit den Rekord auf dem Atlantik mit insgesamt 21 beobachteten Stürmen und Hurrikanen. Erst im Jahre 2005 wurde es deutlich übertroffen, erneut dann im Jahr 2020.
(#) 1950 ist bekannt als das das aktivste Jahr mit den meisten starken Hurrikanen, es waren 8.
(+) 1886 gab es nach den bisherigen Aufzeichnungen die meisten Hurrikane (7), die das Festland der USA erreichten.

"MH" - Starke Hurrikane (Kategorie 3, 4 oder 5 auf der Saffir-Simpson-Skala)
"ACE" - Aufsummierte Energie Ein Index, der die Anzahl der Systeme mit ihrer Lebensdauer und Stärke kombiniert. Er wird berechnet, indem das Quadrat der maximalen Mittelwinde in jedem Sturm alle 6 Stunden für die gesamte Saison aufsummiert wird (Einheit: 104 kt2).
